Vista 2

Ridiculous.(Warning: Following Post may contain extreme hatred of Windows Vista. If you do not wish to bear this, please skip this post. Thank you)Ridiculous is the only word I can think of to describe Vista properly. To quote UHF, “They’re so stupid! Stupid!Today I went to an electronics store. They had nearly 40 laptops of different shapes and sizes lined up, all running the new Windows Vista. The first new thing I noticed was the gadgets. At first sight, the widgets/gadgets look exactly the same. The Apple Stickies is the same as the Windows Notes.

Windows
Now guess which came first? Not Windows, that’s for sure. Even worse was the fact that half the widgets just didn’t work. There was no internet connection. On Apple, when there’s no internet connection, Dashboard shows a ” “. Windows Sidebar shows a puzzling “-” on every widget.
–:– –_, _ 20–

doesn’t really help. Then there was a camera built in (iSight), a windows switcher (Exposé), slight’s transparent windows and a glossy feeling (Aqua), and even a funny little thing called Word. Now, Word was stupid because I couldn’t use it without an internet connection. You have to sign up for a trail, and get a key. Then if you like it, you get a key to buy it. I couldn’t even use it.Some of the computers had crashed and I couldn’t even log in. In the lower right-hand corner, there was a menu. Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and… Hibernate? What the heck?Apperently is doesn’t draw power from the socket when hibernating… it’s for people who are too lazy to unplug it or just turn it off.Wait, I’m not done yet…And that’s just the software issues. The trackpads barely worked. There was a touch-screen little version (Sound familiar? Touch-screen, anyone?) but the feature barely worked. I had to use my fingernail just to move the mouse, let alone click. Then the new screensaver – bubbles! Bubbles! BUBBLES!I mean, come on…Pathetic. Here’s to gladly awaiting the release of Leopard!(Yes, I just saw UHF and really enjoyed it. Top ten!)

wtf is sleep? there is turn off, restart, stand by and hibernate on most windows, but wtf is sleep?

  2. Lietk12 Says:

Hibernate is for laptops like standby, but it saves memory to the harddrive. Standby is where it keeps memory in the memory, which requires a steady (but small) of power. But what’s sleep?

Vista is a memory hog. It is pretty cool in terms of aesthetics, but Mac is better. The screensavers are pathetic, and the themes only okay. Windows Media Center 2003 had a theme, Royale, that was better than some of the vista themes. Maybe XP themes work for Vista…?

Vista is no memory hog.It more or less uses the same amount of RAM as Mac OSX. Now don’t judge Vista running on an El Cheapo Dell with 512 MB RAM. It runs just fine on a machine with a gig of RAM – the standard amount of RAM on any Mac.
And oh, Vista uses any free RAM to prefetch the most used apps to dramatically reduce load times.

Its a new OS designed for new PCs. Good luck running it on your old PC. Get ready to shell out $179 for Mac OS new service pack, oh, Leopard. :)

And oh, sleep is a ultra-low power state.

How does Vista use more or less the same amount of memory as Mac OS X? The system requirements clearly state that Vista requires 512MB of RAM, whereas Tiger’s system requirements clearly state that it requires 256MB of RAM. With OS X I need 3GB of space whereas Vista requires 15GB of space. Taking a look at the list of supported hardware on Apple’s site shows that Tiger can run on a Powerbook G3: a 7 year old computer. Can Vista run on a 7 year old computer?

Then there’s this. That alone is keeping me from permanently installing it.

Oh, and when Apple points a gun at my head to upgrade to Leopard, then we can start talking about Apple’s OS upgrades.

Wait until you see the new screen saver in Leopard. Think real-time mosaics using your iPhoto library and Ken Burns effect all rolled into one :-)

GUYS, STOP WITH THE NERD FIGHT, I ONLY ASKED ONE STINKING QUESTION!!!!

Let’s be fair. The stickies all kind of look like, um, stickies. Hardly reasonable to blame Microsoft for copying Apple for buying (or was it copying – to hard to remember that long ago anymore) a third party app that was designed to, um, look like Post-It Notes (TM).
